Reducing Food and Digital Poverty
This summer, the Parent and Carer Alliance have been delivering a huge community effort to support disabled children and their families with food provision during the school holidays, at a time when free school meal vouchers come to an end.
With support from the Crisis and Resilience Fund, we have been able to respond to what families have told us they need — recognising that one size does not fit all.
Food packages have been adapted to reflect the differing needs, cultures, dietary requirements and preferences of our communities. Most importantly, we have taken the time to listen to families and respond to their voices, making sure that support is meaningful, respectful and accessible.
This has included providing food and support at both the Mela and our SEN Celebration, bringing families together in welcoming, inclusive spaces while helping to ease some of the financial pressure that the summer holidays can bring.
For many families of disabled children, the additional costs and challenges of the holidays can be significant. This initiative is about more than simply providing food — it is about listening, recognising difference, reducing barriers and making sure families feel seen, valued and supported.
We are incredibly grateful to the Crisis and Resilience Fund for making this work possible, and to everyone involved in making sure disabled children and their families have access to support, connection and community throughout the summer.
